Long Island’s wineries are concentrated in Eastern Suffolk County, with the majority on the North Fork. One of the biggest challenges of a wine tasting tour is traveling from the Western end of Long Island or between wineries on the North and South Fork.
We recommend limiting your itinerary to three vineyards to ensure that you have plenty of time in the tasting rooms without feeling rushed.
You can review some common travel times to see just why your choice of transportation company is crucial for the logistics of a Long Island vineyard tour.
Travel Time from NYC or Nassau County to Long Island’s Wine Country
The average travel time from NYC to the North Fork is around 2 hours, depending on morning traffic. This is the longest time you will spend in one of our Luxury Fleet vehicles before wine tasting begins.
If you travel from Nassau County, you can expect a travel time of around 1 hour and 30 minutes.
This time is crucial, not because it will limit your tasting time, but because it will add to your total winery tour time. Winery tours typically take around 6 to 8 hours in total. If you are coming from NYC, you could expect the total tour time to be on the longer end of the range.
Travel Time Between Long Island Vineyards with Examples
As most vineyards on the North Fork are in a concentrated area, you can expect travel time between locations to be limited to around 20 minutes in most cases.
- As an example, the trip from Pindar Vineyards in Peconic, one of the oldest estates on Long Island, to Jason’s Vineyard in Jamesport is about 15 minutes. These are both on the North Fork.
- If you include a vineyard on the South Fork, like the Duck Walk Vineyards Southold location, the trip is around 40 minutes. Similarly, traveling from the North Fork to one of the larger estates like Wölffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack will also take around 40 – 50 minutes in daytime traffic.
The takeaway here is clear. If you plan your itinerary around the North Fork, you can reduce total travel time and spend more time at each vineyard. If you do decide to visit the South Fork as well (many people do), it’s best to visit two vineyards in the North, and one in the South as the final stop for the day.
