Winery tours are sometimes more affordable in winter due to lower demand. However, because many wineries on Long Island offer indoor and outdoor experiences, it’s not guaranteed that the price of a tasting experience will change. If you are interested in visiting a winery (or a few) to taste the local wines, we recommend prioritizing your schedule based on convenience rather than price.

Is Winter the “Off-Season” for Wine Tasting on Long Island?

Winter is traditionally the off-season for wine tasting, especially around the North Fork, but a few things are changing:

  • Most of the largest wineries are now open year-round for tasting and tour reservations. Indoor tasting rooms mean you can enjoy an authentic winery experience even in the crisp winter weather.
  • Winter sees fewer crowds than the summer peak, but travelers are increasingly interested in this season for convenience factors. Fewer guests mean more intimate experiences, where you can meet the winemakers and talk about the production process in detail.
  • Accommodation is one factor that is almost certainly less expensive in winter. Local B&Bs, hotels, and other establishments often offer discounted packages from December to March.

While winter doesn’t automatically mean that winery tours are more affordable, there are practical reasons why you might want to choose this period for a wine tasting experience. North Country Limousine operates year-round, and wine tours are always available (weather permitting).

  • Most vineyards have food trucks on-site during the busy season, but those without kitchens or catering might not have food truck availability during the winter. Many vineyards allow guests to bring snacks (some recommend it) to try with flights of wine.
  • It’s recommended that you limit the number of wineries you visit in a single day. Most groups can get through 3 or 4 tastings in a 6-to-8-hour tour, although limiting your stops to 2 or 3 wineries can allow more time flexibility and a better experience of the atmosphere at each vineyard.
